Erroneous Examples as a Source of Learning in Mathematics
نویسنده
چکیده
We analyze why and how erroneous examples can be beneficially employed in learning mathematics. The ‘Why’ addresses reasoning and attitudes that are rarely fostered in today’s mathematics lessons but which are useful for learning, certainly needed in real life and in all applications of mathematics as well as in maths itself. The ‘How’ addresses pedagogical strategies capitalizing on errors via erroneous examples and their realization in the webbased learning environment ActiveMath . An analysis of classes of errors informs the knowledge representation, the instructional strategies and the feedback of ActiveMath .

Can Erroneous Examples Help Middle-School Students Learn Decimals?
This paper reports on a study of learning with erroneous examples, mathematical problems presented to students in which one or more of the steps are incorrect. It is hypothesized that such examples can deepen student understanding of mathematics content, yet very few empirical studies have tested this in classrooms settings. In a classroom study, 255 6th, 7th, and 8th graders learned about deci...
متن کاملEffects of Erroneous Examples
Erroneous examples have rarely been investigated or used as a learning intervention in mathematics learning, either within a technology-enhanced learning (TEL) system or within a classroom. Here, ’erroneous examples’ are (worked) solutions including one or more errors that the student is asked to detect and to correct. Still, an intelligent system could use its potential to help students to wor...
متن کاملLearning from Erroneous Examples
Erroneous examples (ErrEx) that is, worked solutions that include one or more errors that the student is asked to detect, explain, and/or correct have been rarely investigated as a teaching strategy in mathematics. On the contrary, correct worked examples have been the focus of research on mathematics and science problem solving, e.g. (4). Yet, the scarce work on ErrEx in mathematics has provid...
متن کاملDesign of Erroneous Examples for ACTIVEMATH
The behaviorist view of learning that informs much of traditional schooling is not likely to invite students and teachers to see errors in a positive light. This is particularly true for mathematics. Our goal is to change this situation by including erroneous examples and other error-related learning opportunities in ActiveMath. This paper investigates the systematic design of erroneous example...
متن کاملSolving Fuzzy Equations Using Neural Nets with a New Learning Algorithm
Artificial neural networks have the advantages such as learning, adaptation, fault-tolerance, parallelism and generalization. This paper mainly intends to offer a novel method for finding a solution of a fuzzy equation that supposedly has a real solution. For this scope, we applied an architecture of fuzzy neural networks such that the corresponding connection weights are real numbers. The ...
